Cannabis consists of three plants having psychoactive properties – Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis. It is capable of producing compounds that are useful for making many drugs and medicines. There are two prime compounds derived from the said plant – CBD and THC. These compounds have unique characteristics that can be used by the medicinal industry.
With its increasing popularity and legalization, cannabis is becoming a significant part of our everyday lives as it becomes more mainstream. Hence, we need to know about its composites and how they can be useful in our daily lives and so let’s check out CBD vs THC.
What is CBD?
CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis. It is the non-psychoactive part of the plant, which means that it is incapable of producing high effects. It contains a small amount of THC as well – about 0.3% - but does not create any mind-altering effects. It is available in many forms, such as oils, capsules, edibles, vaporizers, patches, lotions, creams, roll-ons, etc.
What is THC?
THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It is also one of the many compounds that can be extracted from cannabis. It is the toxic part of that plant that can get you high. It tends to fight against numerous diseases as well, with medical marijana legal in nearly all US states.
How are CBD and THC different?
CBD and THC both own the pleasure of having therapeutic effects that can help in treating various diseases. However, they have several differences that can be understood as follows:
- Arrangement of Atoms
- Origin of Compound
- Psychoactive Effects
- Side Effects
- Legality
Arrangement of Atoms.
CBD and THC have the same chemical formula C21H30O2. But they differ in terms of the arrangement of atoms. The different orientation of the structure causes them to have unique characteristics.
Origin of the Compound.
CBD and THC are said to originate from different forms of the cannabis plant. CBD is usually found in the hemp, whereas THC comes from other forms of cannabis plants.
Psychoactive Effects.
As already mentioned, CBD is the non-toxic part of cannabis, while THC is the toxic one. Although CBD has some traces of THC, it still doesn't possess the intensity to get you high. Meanwhile, THC works oppositely and produces euphoric effects in the consumer.
Side Effects.
Both of these compounds are said to have their own set of side-effects. CBD produces mild harmful effects such as fatigue, dizziness, or loss of appetite. On the other hand, the side-effects of THC include increased heart rate, anxiety, dry eyes and mouth, memory loss, coordination issues, etc.
The legality of the Products.
Ever since the therapeutic effects of marijuana have been introduced, the limited use of marijuana – or should I say 'medical marijuana' – has been legalized in many places. CBD products are usually allowed to be consumed under the law. However, THC products are illegal in many regions. Hence, before using any of the products, it is preferable to keep the laws of the state you reside in into consideration.
CBD vs THC - Drug Testing.
It is said to avoid the intake of any of the compounds, CBD and THC, before taking a drug test. These cannabinoids get stored in the fat of the body and are likely to appear on a drug test. CBD is difficult to detect. Hence, it doesn't appear on the results that easily. However, THC can easily be identified and appear on your tests.
Despite not being able to be detected, CBD might appear on the results due to the little amounts of THC present in it and the dosage you are consuming each day if you are using full spectrum CBD products. With isolate and broad spectrum CBD, THC is extracted from the final oil consumed by the user.
